China’s corn production is expected to reach a record 273 million tons in 2021-22, up 5 million tons or 2 percent from last month’s forecast, up 5 percent from the previous year and 5 percent above the five-year average of 260.3 million tons, according to the GLOBAL Agricultural Production report released by the US Department of Agriculture.

China’s corn yield per unit area in 20201/22 is expected to reach a record 6.5 tonnes per hectare, 2 per cent higher than forecast last month, 3 per cent higher than last year and 5 per cent higher than the five-year average. The area harvested is estimated at 42 million hectares, in line with last month’s forecast, but up about 700, 000 hectares, or 2 percent, from a year earlier.

The area sown to corn in heilongjiang, Jilin, Shandong, Henan, Inner Mongolia and Hebei has increased slightly or remained stable in recent years, mainly because of changes in agricultural policies.

In 20201/22, corn-producing regions such as northeast China, North China Plain and Central China Plain enjoyed good growth conditions, especially in northeast China, where Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning and Inner Mongolia accounted for nearly half of the country’s corn and soybean output, with favorable weather conditions in most regions.Weather is conducive to rapid seeding and crop growth, boosting maize yield potential per unit area.

In addition to good seasonal conditions, farmers have also been encouraged by policies to reduce fallow areas and improve grain rotation.

Government incentives for corn processors and ethanol programs helped entice farmers to increase corn acreage. The government’s policies are expected to boost domestic corn production in the short term.About 75 percent of China’s corn is used to make feed.
